If you wouldn't keep a small dog or a cat in the space full time, its too small for a rabbit to live comfortably. We discourage the use of store bought "rabbit cages". They are all much too small and very hard to properly clean. We can always tell when a rabbit has been housed in a small cage. The rabbit winds up with a dirty bottom and excessive urine staining. In many cases the urine will cause scalded skin, and sore and infected/abscessed back feet are typical, especially on any sort of grate or wire floor. Rabbits do not have padded feet, so they require soft surfaces to live on.
We highly recommend (and require) a puppy sized exercise pen for any adoptions.
Large exercise pens, Best Pet, or large lucite pet pens are the easiest to maintain and it's what we use in our rescue. It provides enough space for your rabbit to binky, stretch, and stand on his hind legs but time out of their housing is still required as bunnies need to run and explore.
The rabbit's enclosure should be lined with fleece or similar + flooring protection such as a plastic chair mat (wood shavings are very bad for their lungs!) and a good size litter box, at least twice the size of the rabbit, should be provided.
Wooden Hay racks are an excellent addition to your enclosure as they reduce hay waste and keep pens tidy. We have them at our rescue for just a minimum $25.00 donation.
Rabbits should never use a water bottle. We require a heavy bottomed bowl or gravity water dispenser. Bottles can shift their teeth, causing overgrown teeth and other problems. Rabbits also drink as much as a small dog, so a bowl allows them to get adequate water.
Litter Boxes:
Rabbits will eliminate in a litter box naturally, if proper litter (pine pellets) and clean hay are provided in the box. We recommend medium to large cat litter boxes, as store bought "rabbit litter boxes" are often far too small for the rabbit to jump into to munch hay and do their business. Pine pellets and rabbit manure are completely compostable and make for excellent garden fertilizer. Paper litter or bedding of any kind remains wet from urine and is unhygienic. Wood shavings and kitty litter are also incredibly dangerous for rabbits. A large litter box and fleece combo is the easiest to maintain, and is the most hygienic for the animal and human members of the household.
We are a proud Rooly Partner for Mess-Free Litter boxes!
Rooly's litter boxes are actually large enough for rabbits as most grated litter boxes marketed for rabbits are entirely too small. Rooly's can comfortably fit typically sized bonded pairs at a the same time, and accommodate large breed single bunnies!
